High-skilled USW members help secure lucrative contract at BWXT Canada

July 8, 2022

The quality work of high-skilled USW members has helped manufacturer BWXT Canada secure a $130-million long-term contract that will sustain hundreds of good jobs at the company’s Cambridge, Ont., operations for many years to come.

“This contract represents nearly a decade of high-skilled jobs for our members, and I am confident in their ability to successfully execute this work,” said USW District 6 Director Myles Sullivan.

Sullivan and leaders of USW Local 2859, representing nearly 300 workers at BWXT Canada’s Cambridge facilities, were on hand for an announcement on July 5 that the company was awarded a $130-million contract by Bruce Power to provide critical components for nuclear power plants.

USW members at BWTX have a well-earned reputation for high-quality manufacturing of essential components needed for nuclear power plants to produce clean electricity and medical isotopes

“Our union is proud to represent the almost 300 members of Local 2859 who have played an integral part in supporting nuclear projects since BWXT entered the industry over 60 years ago,” Sullivan said.

The contract awarded to BWTX calls for the fabrication and supply of replacement feeder tube assemblies for Bruce Power’s reactor units 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 as part of its Major Component Replacement (MCR) Project. Feeder tube assemblies in CANDU reactors transport heavy water coolant between the reactor and steam generators.

Production manufacturing is scheduled to begin this fall, and the project is expected to be completed in 2031.
