District 3 Health, Safety and the Environment Committee
The USW is the health and safety union. We provide leadership, advice and direction to members and local unions, government and employers, on health and safety at work, stress prevention and protecting injured workers. Our union also provides leadership by preventing and dealing with harassment – all in an effort to build respectful workplaces.

Emergency Response Team (ERT)
When workplace tragedy occurs, the USW is here to help
The union’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) relies on notification from our local unions as quickly as possible following a fatality or catastrophic incident. In the event of a workplace fatality or life-altering injury to any Steelworker, the local should notify its staff representative and the ERT as soon as possible.
Emergency Response Team 24-hour hotline: 1-866-526-3480
Have the victim’s name and the USW local number available, as well as the employer’s name. During emergencies call 911.
Right to Refuse
You have the right to refuse any work that creates an undue hazard to the health and safety of any person. It’s the law, but there are some rules. We have created posters that you can download, print and post to your union bulletin boards that explains how the right to refuse works.
Mental health resources
Daily life is full of challenges. Sometimes our mental health suffers as a result. But there are ways that our union can support members who are experiencing mental health injuries.
Raising the Bar on Women’s Health and Safety
Steelworkers pride ourselves on being the health and safety union. Women of Steel are pointing to hazards and health issues they face as women workers. Let’s make women’s health and safety issues a priority for action!
The David Ellis Scholarship
Every year in Canada, 30 young workers are killed on the job. Another 40,000 are injured, many of them seriously.
The David Ellis Scholarship is a health and safety scholarship award available to children and grandchildren of any Steelworker member. Each year, District 3 Director Scott Lunny, District 6 Director Kevon Stewart and District 5 Director Dominic Lemieux are offering three scholarships of $1,000 in each Canadian USW district to help selected high school students continue their education at university, college or another educational institution. The David Ellis Scholarship is part of the New Worker Awareness Program.
