The United Steelworkers union has a proud legacy of protecting the rights of all members. The first of the founding principles of our union, written in 1942, is “to unite in one organization, regardless of creed, colour or nationality, all workmen and working women.” (If written today, this should simply read “workers.”)
This commitment continues to be at the heart of everything we do. The United Steelworkers stands behind our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Two-Spirited, Intersex, Asexual, Non-Binary, Pansexual, plus (LGBTQ2SIA+) members and ensures they have a workplace free from harassment and discrimination, that they are treated equitably and with respect. The USW also works hard to ensure that members of the LGBTQ2SIA+ community have equal opportunities within our organization.
We are proud that our district is the first to have a Trans Liaison who serves as a valuable resource to local unions, members and staff alike.
