Honouring service, building strength: Meet the Veterans of Steel District 3 Committee
In a powerful stride toward unity, advocacy and healing, USW District 3 is proud to introduce the Veterans of Steel (VOS) Committee, a dynamic and compassionate force representing those who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces, whether currently active or retired, as well as veterans from our allied forces. This isn’t just a committee, it’s a movement.
A mission rooted in respect and resilience
The Veterans of Steel Committee is more than a name, it’s a promise. A promise to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with those who’ve worn the uniform and now navigate the complexities of civilian life. Whether it’s reducing the stigma around PTSD, supporting mental and physical recovery or advocating for fair workplace treatment, VOS is here to ensure no veteran walks alone.
Their work includes:
- Championing mental health awareness and destigmatization of PTSD;
- Assisting veterans in transitioning back into the civilian workforce;
- Crafting collective bargaining language to protect members during training or deployment; and
- Advocating for veterans’ rights at all levels of government.
Honouring Indigenous and all Veterans
This November, VOS is calling on all locals to connect with their Royal Canadian Legions to organize ceremonial wreath laying for:
- National Indigenous Veterans Day – Saturday, November 8
- Remembrance Day – Tuesday, November 11
These ceremonies are a heartfelt tribute to the sacrifices made and a reminder of the diverse stories that shape our military history.
A new era: VOS becomes mandatory for all local unions
At the 2022 International Convention, the Veterans of Steel Committee was officially recognized as a mandatory committee for all locals within the USW. This landmark decision ensures that every local has a dedicated space for veterans to connect, advocate and thrive.
Get involved: sign up and stand together
The best way to support this incredible initiative? Encourage your veteran members to sign up for the District 3 Veterans of Steel network. It’s easy, impactful and opens the door to camaraderie, resources and collective action.
Join the Veterans of Steel network
Whether you’re a veteran, an ally, or simply someone who believes in honoring service with action, the Veterans of Steel Committee is your call to stand tall, speak out, and support those who’ve given so much.
Let’s build a future where every veteran is seen, heard and empowered.
